The Story

This dreamy David Hockney poster features Celia in a Black Dress with White Flowers, 1972, with wonderful hand-drawn Hockney details all around the margins and lovely multicoloured underlining on all the text. We love the posters where David takes over the factory print process and makes these mass-produced objects look hand made. This one was produced by Petersburg Press for David's July 1980 show 'David Hockney: Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink / Drawings and Prints 1961-1979.' As with all the Petersburg Press Hockney posters, this was designed in concert with the artist and produced not to a set format but to a size that matched the art. Although this show was at Tate, it was curated by Petersburg.

In his foreword for 'Hockney Posters' (1987), Eric Shanes writes: 'For an exhibition of his collection of drawings and prints entitled Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink, held at the Tate Gallery in 1980, Hockney created a pictorial frame around the reproduction of a drawing of Celia Birtwell, and played a characteristic game by adding stresses to the lettering, even underlining the word 'free' to emphasise the accessible nature of the show.'

Approximate dimensions: 20 x 30 in; 50.8 x 76.2 cm

This is an authorised David Hockney poster. It's an archive / vintage poster, printed in 1980,  now collectable and in short supply. Our stock of it is sold as new. Given its age, the condition is very, very good.  Please hang away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. We send out posters rolled in tubes.
