The Story

To celebrate the 80th birthday of Hans J. Wegner’s China Chair, Fritz Hansen is releasing a limited edition of 80 very special collector’s chairs. The Home here at Salts Mill is the only UK stockist.

Handcrafted in Denmark from the highest grade European cherry wood with a mirrored grain and oiled finish, complemented by the natural tactility of the natural aniline pure leather seat cushion. These carefully selected materials will only become more beautiful over time.

Each chair features a unique numbered plaque of xx/80 and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the head of design at Fritz Hansen.

Wegner was early in his career when he designed the first version of the China Chair. He was exploring how to create furniture that could be produced when wood was scarce. His response, inspired by an 18th century Chinese chair, was neither low cost nor easily made. But with the organic curve of its back and light frame, it was recognised as an instant classic, receiving accolades when it was shown in the Spring exhibition of the School of Arts and Crafts in 1944. The chair has been in continuous production since then.
