The Story

In this fascinating second volume, Christopher Simon Sykes explores the life and work of our greatest living artist.

Picking up Hockney's story in 1975, the author finds the artist flitting between Notting Hill and California, where he took inspiration for the swimming pool series of paintings; creating the acclaimed set designs for operas around the world; and embracing emerging technologies – the camera and fax machine in the 1970s and 80s, and most recently the iPad.

Sykes continues his lively and revelatory account with unprecedented access to Hockney's paintings, notebooks, diaries and the man himself.

This second volume of the biography is subtitled 'A Pilgrim's Progress.' Volume 1, subtitled 'A Rake's Progress,' is also listed on this site. When purchasing these biographies, do consider David's sister Margaret Hockney's autobiography, My Mother is not Your Mother, also available here - it's an invaluable companion piece.
